Changed to change the world aptly applies to the life of Mason Betha, pastor and founder of El Elyon International Church and Mason Betha Ministries. As a platinum recording artist in the late 1990's, Mason Betha referred to often as Ma$e, traveled the world and touched the lives of millions of fans. Today, he is still a world traveler, but he now brings messages of living successfully while pursuing your purpose.
Born in Jacksonville, FL and raised in Harlem, NY, Mason rose from humble beginnings. Growing up in impoverished conditions of the projects, Mason knew he wanted a better life. He vowed that if he made it out, he would never return. He had a passion for basketball and excelled academically, both a ticket out of his destitute life. But he, like many others from similar urban beginnings who wanted “out”, began to explore the idea of becoming a hip-hop artist. Although he earned a scholarship to the State University of New York, that opportunity took a back seat to his music aspirations.
In 1996, he got his start by joining the roster of artists produced by Sean “P Diddy” Combs. That same year, he proved to be the ingredient of multi-platinum hits of the biggest names in the music industry. He managed to fuse pop, hip-hop and R&B to create chart busters each time. With so many high profile guest appearances, he continued to make his mark in the music industry by releasing his own debut album in 1997, “Harlem World”, a quadruple platinum success.
In 1999, with his 2nd album released, his life took an abrupt turn. He remembered the prophecy over his life at the age of 12 that he would be used in a mighty and compelling way to change the world. Searching for truth and yielding to a higher calling, he stunned the music industry with news of his retirement to “pursue his faith”.
Early in his retirement, Mason realized he was called to motivate people to recognize their fullest potential and true purpose, which would in turn lead them to total life prosperity. In 2001, S.A.N.E. (Saving A Nation Endangered) Church International was birthed, now El Elyon International Church. He additionally received two Honorary Doctorate degrees, including an Honorary doctorate of Theology, that he received in 2002, from St. Paul's Bible Institute in New York, NY. The music artist that was said to have “carved out a musical space in our culture with pure talent, charisma, and irresistible appeal”, began to use his God-given talent to speak to a desperate generation. He broke the traditional confines of church and began to speak to millions. He took a message of peace and prosperity to uncommon and undesirable places, giving people hope and a new outlook on a better way of life.
In 2004, he returned to the music industry with his much anticipated 3rd album “Welcome Back”. The album caused quite a stir, but proved once again to be a chart topper, reaching Top 10 status on both the Pop and R&B charts. Both the music industry and well-known faith scholars gave accolades for the project's thought-provoking lyrics with positive undertones.
Presently, Mason Betha can be seen daily on his television broadcast, “Born to Succeed” all over the nation, and devotes time to his world outreach. Balancing his calling, he spends a great deal of time with his beautiful wife Twyla and their two sons. On December 31, 2008, Mason will also expand his ministry to the West Coast by planting a new location of El Elyon International in Phoenix, Arizona. With millions of lives being impacted since his transformation from just a mere music artist to a dynamic world leader, it is clear that Mason Betha was changed to change the world. |
